Hello! As a mother raising 3 children on the hill, let’s talk about a guide for visiting Idyllwild with your kiddos in 2024.
On the Way Up:
When heading up the 243 from Banning, stop at two family-friendly spots. Vista Point offers breathtaking views and a photo-worthy boulder. Further along, Lake Fulmore offers a tranquil stroll around its scenic mountain pond with a lookout/fishing bridge.
From the desert cities via the 74 or Temecula on the 371, don’t miss Lake Hemet’s picturesque setting with waterfront picnic spots accessible.
Of Course, Hiking:
Pick up a Forest pass at the Forest Service station (across from the Sushi place) at only $5/day. San Jacinto Ranger Station Forest Service Office is located at 54270 Pine Crest Ave, the number is 909–382–2921. For trails like a gentle stroll in the woods try the Ernie Maxwell Trail. Continue on further from this trail for the rewarding Devils Slide Trail bout 40 min up revealing an epic view. Ernie Maxwell can be done in a couple of hours, Devils Slide is closer to 4hrs with a young one. About 45 min up Deer Springs Trail is an amazing view (perfect for kids in carriers). I’ve made a YouTube describing this as one of my favorite quick-to-hikes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTmJYO8SPmA Also, consider the Idyllwild Park Trail, which is a short two-mile easy loop providing a great place for pack-a-lunch. Look into AllTrails.com to help decide. https://www.alltrails.com/us/california/idyllwild--2
When You’re Hungry:
Start your day with flavorful quality coffee at Alpaca and Sunflower Bakery. For breakfast, try Red Kettle, Mama’s Egg House, or Sunflower Bakery. For lunch family-friendly options include Atomic Cow, Mama Mia’s, Ravenhill Bagels, and Mile High Cafe, For dinner definitely look into La Casita, Lumber Mill, Fratello’s, and Idy Sushi Rolls. The sweet tooth desert spot is Idyllwild Ice Cream and Jerky. These are all businesses we go to regularly. Friendly, kind dog-friendly owners who provide outside seating areas, while keeping price budgets in mind.
For Fun:
Idyllwild has a public playground off 243 across from the Shell Gas station, please enjoy. Below you can access a fitness area and the creek. Strawberries grow wild on the creek in the summer season, Blackberries in the fall, and calms down in winter. Upstairs in the Fort is Earth and Fire pottery to paint pieces that will make lasting memories. Monday Mornings at the library is story time. The library has a great layout with a variety from baby flip books to toddler easy reads and hand-play toys. Stop by the Art Department (by the Fire station) to grab an artsy project for your overnight stay on the mountain and fun memorabilia. If your toddler is into skateboarding, balance bike, or scooter rides, you must stop by the Skatepark at The Pines. You can also access Strawberry Creek from the backside of the skatepark. Nature Center is an educational facility that teaches you about our local plant and animal life here on the hill. If you want birds, amphibians, and an entire mix of baby/toddler conversation starters to fuel your youth’s minds go to the Nature Center. There is outside space for meditation and short strolls as well. The Museum is a must especially while the babies are still young enough to be less picky on entertainment. Divulge in the history of Idyllwild and meet great mountain folks at the Idyllwild Historical Museum.
Places to Stay:
Consider Airbnb options with cribs or toddler-friendly rooms. Due to the uncertainty of availability of the home rentals at the time of this article, I’ll simply direct you towards Airbnb or VRBO. Family-friendly hotels include Blue Bird Cottage Inn, Strawberry Creek Inn, and Fireside Inn. For vacation cabins, contact Martha at Idyllwild Vacation Cabin, or search Idyllwild Vacation Cabins online. Again fabulous people and customer service with these businesses.
Meet Our Mayor:
Don’t miss Mayor Max, our canine mayor, who often greets visitors in town on weekends! Yes, you heard that right, our Mayor is a dog. :)
